i would say both of them. basically even if you have been attacked physically and emotionally - your just never prepared/ready for those type of attacks they hurt like hell.

An old phrase by Edward Bulwer-Lytton comes to my mind here "The pen is mightier than the sword."

I think on a whole words are stronger and last much longer than anything physical! Words have the power to inspire and to divide.
Attacking angry words stay with me longer than any bruise, cut or bump I've gotten.

Give me your best shot with words. Then come at me with a stick.

I'll take the words as long as you've got breath in your body. If you think words hurt, put on some word-armour. Nothing anyone says should have the power to hurt you.

Oddly, the research is indicating that what hurts you most is watching someone you love be attacked (physically or verbally), when you are restrained from intervening.

This is one of the reasons that children who observe their mothers being beaten by their fathers suffer worse than those who were physically abused themselves.

Pain is pain, but you have to control your reactions. Sometimes your pride is hurt more than your body.
When my daughter hurts herself, I always tell her that it will not hurt less if she cries.
As for words, I have realized that they only have the power that you give them. They're only words, I choose not to let them hurt me.

It depends on who is attacking.
If it is someone I like or trust, then words. That pain will stay for days (or much, much longer).

If it is someone I don't like or care about, then physically attacked. I could not care less about their words.

Physically, remember any injury you incur take a small part of your life away, it is the stress on your body that does the most damage. People can only stress you out with words if you let them.

Words hurt worse and do not heal as quickly as physical wounds.

It has always seemed to me that words have a much more lasting effect. Of course how strong that effect is depends on the individual.
