My friend is alot younger than me and I wish that I could help her but I am stuck on how to help her. Her grandmother, who hasn't spoken to her in many years, asked her to choose something for Xmas. The girl chose a laptop and her grandmother said yes. The girl is only 12, will be 13 very soon. She is in 7th grade. Her mother told her that once she got into high school,, she would be aloud to have a laptop and a cell phone. In the girl's position, what would you do?

12 is not to young to have a computer//// if she was mine it would stay in the kitchen on the table until high school..by that time she [ should ] be street smart and not break the rules about dating,pedophiles,.................but i see nothing wrong with home work, girl chats, talking to friends, games,,,

Well, I don't know that she should do anything but accept the gift from her grandmother. For whatever reason her grandmother has decided to reenter her life and that is obviously an attempt at a relationship.
The girl's mom can put the laptop away for her until she is old enough to have it.

If I were the girl, I would try and talk to my mom about it and tell her what is on my heart. See if I could understand my mom’s concerns and negotiate an alternative solution that makes me and my mom both happy. However, if the mother insists, she needs to follow her mother’s wishes.

While we live at home, we need to live within the guidelines of our parents. Conflict can tare a home up… a laptop and cell phone is not worth a conflict.

she should have abided by her mother's rules, but maybe she can talk to her grandmother and they can figure something else out for Christmas... maybe something better...
