How come whenever someone asks a question about their child concerning health or problems 99% of the answers are "take them to the ER right away!" I mean, I've seen parents saying "my baby is drooling alot..is it teething?" and people answer "take them to the ER!" Do the parents on here really call their doctors and rush their kids to the hospital that often?

I hate that instead of calling their child's doctor they take them to the ER, case in point, My husband put a chair leg down on my 3 year old toe,she ended up pulling her toe out from under the chair before he could lift it up and ripped her toenail clean off,she was bleeding pretty bad so I called her doctor who's office was closed ans was told by them to take because they were afraid it was broke(which it ended up being broke ),it is an hour drive to the hospital,so the whole time she is crying and bleeding, when we get there the hand us a sterile cloth and tell us to apply pressure,we sat in the waiting room for 2 hours because there was 3 people ahead of us,1 was seen at another hospital and by her doctor and her mother was not happy with their answers,1 was there because she had a sore throat and her doctor didn't give her any meds to take for it,and the other person was there because her son had a fever. I really wish people would use common sense on when to use the ER and when to just listen to their doctor,my daughter finally got her foot looked at and the staff was great,we actually got out of there before those other 3 people because they knew what my daughters problem was and were able to help her.

I have never taken my child to the ER....because she's never needed to be taken. Ear infections, ruptured ear drums, fevers (sickness related AND teething), croup, etc. We've had our share of yuckies but none of it severe enough for the ER. I've only been to the ER 3 times in my entire life....and only 2 for myself. All have been broken limbs or asthmatic attacks. My parents didn't even take us to the ER for stitches if it was during the local Urgent Care's practice hours. I think our culture is drifting toward being excessively worried about health matters sometimes. If my daughter gets sick in the middle of the night we dont rush to the ER we wait until the next morning and call in early to grab a last minute slot with our Ped. The ER should be strictly for broken bones, breathing issues, heart attacks, and after hours stitches. Or things even worse that I can't even begin to dream up.

PS- From someone who's ripped their toenail off...it's just like any other injury. My parents slapped some neosporin and a bandaid on it and it healed eventually. And for broken toes...I have friends to freak out and demand ER everytime they break their toes and it makes me want to smack them. If you have a broken toe the only thing the ER can do for you is make you wait in a long line to tell you wether or not you really have a broken toe. Then they just tape the sucker to the two on either side, charge you an arm and a leg, then send you home. There's absolutely no point.

Depends on the question, I've answered several parenting questions with my own opinion, but when I believe it really is a medical problem I always say I think it's best to talk to a doctor, as I do not have any medical training.

I only suggest the ER if a baby isn't drinking or peeing or sounds really sick. I do however suggest that people go to the ER to get the morning after pill if that is their only option.

I guess other people just don't want to think that they said a baby was fine when they weren't.

Some people don't really read the questions, they just want their 2 points so they give the same answer to everybody. As with all advice, take what you want and leave the rest.

Because we don't want to give you the wrong information, so the best thing to do is have your child examined by a professional. We are not all doctors on here, and we just want your kid to be safe.

I've noticed that too :-)

Doctors in the ER get so sick of parents bringing in their sick kids. It's one thing if your child is seriously ill, but bringing a child in with the flu or a stomach ache is ridiculous.

It is hard to be able to know what is wrong with a child without seeing. Use common sense but above all be safe.

I can't stand seeing those answers either. Oh, and I hate the "get a second opinion" answers. (Like it is that easy)

The ones that say that don't even have children.

it's really just a bunch of people trying to be sarcastic or funny, i highly doubt that parents do such things
