There is this guy I know in my martial arts class and I think he has been flirting with me. He is always friendly and like after saying hi or bye to everyone, he'll say it a second time towards me. He is very nice, etc. The head instructor mentioned something about perfume and added jokingly towards this guy in question, "Well, I guess you guys wouldn't know about it, but I'm surprised Brad didn't!" And that got me wondering that maybe he may be gay... He is skinny.(although I've seen toothpick guys before have large families). So, my question is: how can you tell if a guy is gay or not? Especially, if he is one of those that you can't tell? I know with with you can spot a mile away. Other than him being skinny and that remark from the head instructor, I don't think he is gay.

The comment may be because this guys is a flirt and assumed to know more about girls or something. I dated a guy who I am 99% is gay some tell tell signs I noticed a little during but especially after breaking up are: he loved shopping, he had feminine mannerisms (like using his hands when talking) and the way he would phrase things and the tone of his voice was more girly, he had a poor relationship with his dad (I've heard this is supposed to link up but I don't really know), he didn't like physical affection (no cudding, no kissing, rarely hand holding or hugging...we were 25 when we dated so very odd), he thought that two gay guys together "made more sense" then two lesbians and the big indicator...his own family had suspicions of it plus when I mentioned it to friends they were also in pretty strong agreeance...although he still hasn't come out. So just look for mannerisms, things he says about gay or lesbians, other people's impressions and unusual things like that. Being skinny or knowing about perfume does not make him gay. Also you could ask him out or something that may help solve the problem too. Good luck!!

You may not be able to make a positive decision based on how he acts and all. The best way to know is by asking. Ask him, and if you are bold enough tell him the reason you are asking; because you like him. That will make him more likely to tell if he is not open about it. You need to make sure you ask him if he likes guys, as bisexuals usually do not consider themselves gay, and he may be bi instead.

I'm not sure why being skinny would mean anything at all, other then being in the stages of AIDS, if that's what you meant... which I don't think he would be practicing martial arts if he was in that condition, although I don't know much about HIV so don't take my word for it.

WreckinShop's idea of having another male observe is fairly good, as a male should be capable of noticing things you can't. Notice I said 'capable', as it really depends on the guy. My personal thoughts is this wouldn't work well enough to answer your question; it would probably just confuse you even more.

i might just be metro. just have a conversation with him. if he's gay then he'll have no problem telling you. if you want to do it a little more discretely then have one of your guy friends observe him and ask his opinion. he might be able to see what you don't. you could go shopping with him and that'll tell you a lot. most guys hate shopping. also if you notice that he's so easy to talk to it's because if he's gay, he'll understand where your coming from. if he's not gay then go for it but if he is, you'll get a great friend. either way you win!

You can usually tells when I guy is gay, by the way they walk, talk, and dress. But if you really want to know if the guy is gay then ask him.

The only way to find out is to ASK HIM. With most gay people, you wouldn't know unless you asked.

This may seem rude but it's not: ask him if he's gay. Fact: ninety percent of gay people, you wouldn't know they are gay.
