if you want one, take your time in deciding where and what to get, because its something that cannot be undone (unless you have loads of money to get is removed by laser, and its much more painful than gettin it actually done). Some people design there own (what i'm planning to do), or you can give your ideas to a decent tatooist who can design it for you. Decent totaooists will usually be ok with doing this. As a woman, be wary about places that may stretch in the future... and think about how visible you want it, as it may not be appropraite for work etc.

If you're not a 100% certain about getting a permanent tattoo, get a temporary one instead. You can get some really good stencils and special ink that can last up to a couple of weeks - depending where you use them. After trying a few temporary ones, you should maybe have a better idea of what you would want done permanently. Another alternative is a more authentic tattoo that you can get that only lasts a couple of years. Check out The Japanese Shop on the internet for the stencils and inks.

If you find a decent tattooist he/she will go through it with you show you designs, help you create your own etc and help you make the best decision.
You may have to pay for a consultation and pay for them to make a design. Even after you have had talks with them you can always change your mind, dont feel pressured to do it just because you have had a chat with someone.
Also it is important to think what effect your tattoo may have on others at work etc. You may want to get it done so that you can cover up if needed.
I havnt had one done yet im still looking, I have heard of a few decent places they are in the UK. Where do you live?
Good Luck!

I've got 2 tattoos, the first one i had done was a playboy bunny on my shoulder, the second was a little pink rose and my daughters initial on my wrist. When i had my first tattoo done, i didn't know what i wanted or where, so i just went into the shop and picked something out. The other one is something special, i knew what i wanted and where i wanted it and i'll never regret it. My playboy one is regret every time i notice it. Unless you know specifically what you want, i wouldn't get one.

Think very carefully before you get a tattoo & where on your body you get it.
How will you feel when you are a grandparent & you have all sort of weird things tattooed on your forearns, hands, neck etc. or any other place on show?
I am not anti-tattoo, I just think they have to be given serious thought in advance.

I don't like to see them on women, so if you must have one be discreet.
Think about when you are older or get married, hate to see a stunning bride with tattoo showing.
My husband as tattoos and they have stopped him getting into places., He had to come home from a weekend stag do as he wasn't allowed to stay at hotel. he is 56 and respectable looking.

I feel that you should wait till you do know what you want, which may not come until you are older. It's the tatoos that people get for no particular reason that they regret later in life. As far as the location goes PLEASE do not put it on the small of your back- its so common and slutty looking. Also don't go with a tribal or asian decal that translates into serenity or wisdom or something cheesy like that. I would say go with something small and meaningful on your ankle.

I don't think I'm the only one in the world with this opinion but I might be! I think tattoos look really vulgar on women, I don't particularly like them on men either. Mind you, I'm not overly fond of multiple piercings either.
Think hard about it before you have it done, if you're not sure, don't succumb to peer pressure and have it done anyway, you'll only regret it.

If you are going for your first tattoo get it done somewhere that you can cover up easily, just incase your work dont like it etc.
always go for something that you are interested in, or like out of nature etc.
I like fantasy novels and always loved the idea of dragons (being a bit sad!) i have a big dragon with flowers on my thigh. and a pegasus on my calf. as i like butterflies too i have one on my shoulder and one on my back.
If its something you have always liked i dont think you can go wrong really. try and stay away from cartoon types though, they tend to look a bit dated after a couple years. but then some people like them

then your not ready for a tattoo yet. you need to think long and hard about this. remember this is something that will be on your body for the rest of your life. and make sure to get it in a place where you would be able to cover it up with clothing if you needed to (for a wedding, party, ect...)
