I believe that the bridesmaids generally pay for their own dresses and the groomsmen usually pay for their tuxes or tux rentals. It's nice then to make sure that all the bridesmaid really do like the dresses and that they are something they could wear again. Also, it's best to find something that is affordable for everyone. If a bridesmaid is having trouble affording the dress, you could also try to help her out with it if you can.

The 'rule' was the bride paid. However, weddings are so individual now that each celebration is different. My husband and I are old school and we paid for our daughters wedding. She paid for the dresses of her bridesmaids and the groom paid for the tux rentals.
I would say that if the bride expects the bridesmaids to buy their own dresses she must give them input as to the choice as they are paying a lot of money for a dress they may or may not be able to wear later.
If the dress is turquoise taffeta, the bride MUST pay.

usually the bridesmaids pay for their own dresses, unless the bride makes it clear that she wants to buy them for the girls, but its the bridesmaids that do the buying they are comitted to this when they said yes to be in your wedding, so they are the ones who do the spending on their dresses. The bride has too many things to buy, unless she is "rich" and wants to throw away more money than go for it. the groomsmen usually rents their tuxes, and each one pays for their own as well. Later the bride usually buys her bridesmaids a little gift to show her thanks for helping, usually 50 dollars or less depending on how many girls she has in the wedding, same goes for the groom.

I've heard of it being paid for by the couple getting married, but any wedding party I've been involved in, the bridesmaids paid for their dresses, and the groomsmen pay for their tux rental. When you accept being in a wedding party, you accept the costs that go with it (within reason).

When I got married in 2003 I paid for for my maid of honors and bridesmaid's dresses. My husband paid for the groomsmen tuxes. I was in a wedding last year and they paid for the dress. But I have heard of people asking the attendant's to buy their own dresses. CONGRATS!! AND GOOD LUCK
