I am going to a salon for a color and they said I have to have a consultation first. Is there a charge for this or am I supposed to tip the consultant?

it would be best to call the salon and ask them if they charge, or if you're expected to tip. it is not rude to ask questions.
some salons may charge, others won't.
i have my "consult" with my hair stylist the day of. basically i tell her what i want her to color it. and then she discusses what color would look best.

Some salons do charge for consultations. ASK. Do you know what you want to achieve? Do you want highlights? Bring a pic. If you are new to highlights then just get a few highlights on top within one color. This will grow out better. If you want an all over color, but darker, go for semi permanent. In some cases semi permanent lasts just as long and is recommended for people who are not sure if they want to stay dark. Stick with the color schemes of your eye color and clothing color. Your eye color will tell you if you are a cool or warm color type. What color clothing looks best on you? Tipping is normally done after any service. But a quick color consultation isn't really a service. They just want to know how much time it takes for the appointment.

It depends on the salon. Call ahead and ask questions.
