Two thoughts come to mind...either you have a flaking of the dermis (dry skin) or there is some irritation to the auricular nerve. This can be determined simply, by pressing at the base of the skull to determine tenderness there. Tenderness in that area would suggest an inflammatory process which generally includes one or more of the cranial nerves. Burning is the 3rd level of pain picked up by the nerve ending. Suggesting there is a pretty advanced stage of what ever the condition is.
