have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

(As a footnote, I would add that I am looking at YOU, Mr. Vice President Cheney)

I agree with the poster above, for whatever reason there would have been wars and killing even if there wasn't Christianity. It seems every culture and civilization has had its share of atrocities no matter what the belief system. Religion is used as an excuse and a scapegoat, but it is just the nature of people to try to conquer and dominate their neighbors.

Politics, power, money, land, oil, that is more what the killing is about.

Christianity, along with every religion, has certainly had it's bad eras, but I do not feel you can judge today's Christians by what has happened in the past.

Oh, as far as Mr. Cheney, my hometown is where he used to live in Wyoming and my dad worked with his father-in-law and actually knew Dick fairly well. He says he was a pretty good guy.

(and I am not a Christian and do not subscribe to any one political party)

To the above named "Marty". What about all the skinhead's in this country who say they are christian but practice abject racism? If it is your true belief that the only people who are really a problem are "islamic fundamentalists", then I envy you.
Check out the link below if you are interested in expanding your perspective. There are many more videos like this, some better than others. Also, I think that the problems that Christianity has infected our nation with go deeper than just VP Cheney, he is merely the tip of the iceburg.

We can debate this until we get blue in the face. Jefferson helped solve the problem, separate church and state. Keep religion out of politics. Then God or religion can be a force for good in people's lives.

Don't forget, politically oriented religious fundamentalists killed the Christ in Christiansity. Keep religion out of politics, and focused on the poor, sick and afflicted.

Thomas Jefferson - (1743-1826)
3rd President of the United States

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that His justice cannot sleep forever."

- "My views...are the result of a lifetime of inquiry and reflection, and very different from the anti-Christian system imputed to me by those who know nothing of my opinions. To the corruption's
of Christianity I am, indeed, opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished any one to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines in preference to all others..."

- "The reason that Christianity is the best friend of Government is because Christianity is the only religion that changes the heart.

- "I hold the precepts of Jesus as delivered by Himself, to be the most pure, benevolent and sublime which have ever been preached to man...

- "Of all systems of morality, ancient of modern, which have come under my observation, none appear to be so pure as that of Jesus." Thomas Jefferson, To William Canby

Sounds like a pretty accurate and concise description of Christianity.Pretty brutal indictment from one of the founding fathers of this "Christian" nation wouldn't you say?

hmm that could be interpreted a few ways,, uniformity in what???? doing all those bad things in a uniformed way? course, Jefferson was sleeping with his slave, even if he freed her he was sleeping with a woman whose race was having all those bad things done to them,,,, so i wouldnt put much merit in what he had to say,,,,,

Well I really don't think it would have been any different if Christianity hadn't been invented. People will always find reasons for killing each other.

Yes and though they burn our bodies and torture us we do not give up our faith, nor are we discouraged because we know the truth and the truth has given us freedom!
