Sorry, filing as married on your tax return doesn't save money. You should get married because you love each other and want to spend the rest of your lives together.

Yes! If thats the only reason to get married or your spouse wants it for the same reason.
Go buy some tax software that will fill out the forms as you enter the information then look at the results, first as a single person, married filing jointly, and married filing seperatly.
also the standard deductions vary for each filing situation.

PETER N, there are too good reasons for a guy to marry. How approximately being a valid father to destiny toddlers and being enjoyed via his spouse? besides, getting back to the question. a foul reason for anyone to marry may be: for money, because of the fact they think of they're getting too previous, or because of the fact they are in a position to't locate somebody they actually love, so as that they settle with somebody they do no longer.

Surely you are joking! There may be worse reasons, but this one is certainly in the running for the trophy!

As far as living together and filing as a common-law couple, the IRS only recognizes common law as defined by the state in which you live. States that recognize common law at all require the couple to cohabit for a period of years before the status of "common law" is recognized. Therefore, using that way of gaining the tax deduction would mean that it would be years before you saw your tax "savings".

Yes that is a bad reason to get married. I think if you check the tax rates carefully, being married will actually cause you to pay more in taxes. That is what is typically referred to as the "marriage tax".

It's a terrible reason to get married! You're better off living with the person. Usually after living with someone for over a year, you can file as a common-law couple which gives you the same tax benefits as a married couple. It's still not a good reason to live with someone but at least you're not taking it all the way. It's not fair to the person you're with especially if they want to get married to you because they love you.

It is not a bad reason if both of you realize and agree to the fact that you're only getting married for a tax shelter. Anything else is a bad idea

YES! If you don't even love them than DEFINITELY YES! Marriage is a long committment. If you marry her she'll think you are ready for anything with her, but in your case it's just to save money. I wouldn't do it and I don't think you should either unless that isn't the only reason why you want to marry her.

I think that would be the only good reason... if it is a good reason. Remember, if your legally married spouse died, you inherit their bills and debt. But not if your just in their will. In today's society, I don't really think there is a good reason be get married. You can love someone, have a ceremony and promise your love to each other and still have all the benefits of being single.
