my mother just passed away last month, at 77,,, my friends/neighbors brought over things like a meal,,, a pound cake etc, i think that is always a nice touch, and appreciated especially if you have relatives come in or people over

Why not wait a bit. When your co-worker comes back to the office take him out to lunch and ask him what would mean the most to the family in the way of a memorial gift.
I know it is hard to decide what to do, but failing the waiting thing, I would most appreciate a nice relaxing night where I didn't have to cook or clean up...so maybe a gift certificate to a local restaurant would be the way to go.

Has the family chosen a charity ? Sometimes the obituary will say "in lieu of flowers, please send contributions to X charity."
If he hasn't picked a charity, you may want to do that on your own. There are many worthy causes: American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, Nature Conservancy, etc.
Are you on friendly terms with your co-worker? If you asked him what you could do would he give you a good answer? If so, ask him. He may appreciate your thoughtfulness.

We have had 2 deaths in our family in the past 2 years. We were hit hard by these and found that when people sent fruit baskets they were helpful because we just didn't feel like going out or shopping or fixing dinner, lunch etc...
Also a donation to his favorite charity would be thoughtful.

one of my families friends passed away last year, they got a centre piece for the garden, a water feature actually, it was gorgeous, he loved his garden and it was a lovely rememberance for him
if not how about a rose bush? there are lovely white roses which will grow all year round and keep his memory alive. or a plaque commemorating his life with a picture of him. all sorts of things, things with meaning, what was his favourite interest? keep his memory alive with everything he loved.all would be appreciated by the family. good luck and condolances to the family.

A gift certicate for a meal out. Sometimes when you have trouble in your life the last thing you want is do the mundane things like cooking.
