Do those advertised "learn-it-yourself" language kits really work? Or do you need a real course to learn a foriegn language?

If you want to actually learn a language you have to take courses.
If you just want to memorize certain phrases and words, then the kits are fine. Your chances of actually learning and adapting form those, however, are slim.

the only real way to learn a foreign language is the live or spend an extended amount of time in a country that only speaks that language. total immersion is necessary. i've found that language kits are very helpful to build a foundation for learning a new language; but ultimately, the learning curve reaches a plateau. the best way is to do both a language kit, take a course, listen to foreign music, read the paper in the foreign language daily, etc ... immerse yourself as much as possible. good luck !

I have found the Michel Thomas courses excellent. He does not load you down with too much grammar. There is no writing or remembering too do. He says that what you know you will not forget. His method is unique, I have tried a few of the major ones but this is the best. Having said, that like any course if you do not repeat the exercises regularly you will fail. Many people start off with enthusiasm but fall by the wayside after a few months. Try it and good luck. By the way I have been congratulated on my Spanish by a Spaniard. Thomas does do other languages.

They help of course. I know when I just started getting interested in Spanish I got one of those, but the only way to really become truely fluent in a language is to be surronded by people who speak it. Hope I helped you, good luck!

They can only work if you do. There is no magic.
