I accidentally claimed 3 exemptions and actually only should have claimed 1- head of household. I have no dependents. I am hoping that my deductions will reduce the amount I have to pay Uncle Sam in the spring, but I need a list of how to maximize my deductions.

First of all, if it is only you, you can not claim Head-of-Household.

Most deductions available to the average taxpayer are at the bottom of page one of the 1040 and on Schedule A.

Without knowing more about your situation, if you claimed three all year and do not own a house, you are going to owe.

All of the tax preperation programs have a pretty thorough listing of tax deductions and it is simple, they guide you through it. Sifting through the IRS forms yourself will take days and just tick you off :)

TaxCut, TurboTax etc
