Mav sweetie take it from a man who knows what he's talking about.

regardless of the (minor) religious difference Sunnis and Shiites lived together in peace for centuries.
it wasn't until the invasion of Iraq when hell broke loose. at first, the Iraqis rejoiced when the US military over thrown the Ba'th regime of Saddam Hussein.

now we have the Iraqi people (Sunnis and Shiites) and Al Qaida (foreign fighters from all over the Mideast and mostly Sunnis) in Iraq right.
Al Qaida in Iraq are committed to fight the Americans in Iraq to the bitter end until we either get out or get killed. that's how they think.

after the first few months the majority of the Iraqis who "rejoiced" when Saddam was caught, started to get tired of the US occupation and the militias started to grow.
in the beginning there was no fighting between Shiites and Sunnis at all. all the fighting was basically against the US and UK. Sunni Iraqis who wanted to get involved in this joined Al Qaida (foreign Arabs) and Shiites Iraqis joined Al Mahdi Army in Baghdad's Sadr city.
now this Mahdi militia was showing our troops hell until the US Army had to make a truce with their leader Muqtada Al Sadr and promised him that the new regime will be controlled by Shiites instead Sunnis who ruled Iraq for many many years under Saddam's regime.

Sunnis see this as treason and therefore justify killing the "traitors". they started bombing Shiite neighborhoods, mosques, and markets.
bottom line is our military is some what responsible for all the sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shiites.

in my opinion both Shiites and Sunnis who do kill innocent people for no reason other than being Sunni or Shiites (civilians) are vicious animals and don't deserve to breath.
unfortunately the civil war has erupted and there's nothing we can do to stop it.
mark my words. this current regime will not last for too long.

it's a sad sad situation Mav :o(

Well.. let me tell you a little about it and I hope this answers your question.

It's been 1400 years since the beginning of this conflict between Shea & Sunna. There is a conflict, political as to whom should the khilafa go.. etc. However, Shea & Sunna have been happily living together ever, and in Iraq, it's not that unusual to see family members of different sect.

So the question that would pop up, what happened? what change did happen in Iraq that re-fired the conflict?

There is nothing new in Iraq since the reflaming of this conflict except the Americans! I'm sorry if the word "Americans" seems stereotyping, but sure I don't mean Americans, but the current USA administration "Divide and conquer".

Oil and Money, check it out. The northeastern part of Iraq has vary little oil. They want more land with oil on it. They will use any means to get it, even use Religious differences as an excuse.

They have different sects within their own religion as well. All groups are fighting for power to control Iraq.

I read it goes all the way back to the time right after Mohamed died. A schism formed as to who should become his successor.

Here is reading about this Mav----->

Information is slowly seeping out that the sectarian violence is being created and exaccerbated by the US secret forces.
First they attack side A, and blame it on side B, and then they attack side B and blame it on side A. Now side A and side B are at war.

This will all cease as soon as America leaves Iraq. It is done intentionally to prolong the war.
Same story, different setting.

Cain and Able??
It started so long ago...no one can remember why.
They just keep fighting, because that's what their
parents and grand parents did.
So, How's that working for ya.
Doesn't seem to be doing, any one, any good.

Sunnis and Shiites?

One is "more Muslim" that the other. Therefore, they disagree in doctrine, theology, and method of rebuilding Iraq.

I dunno, I have wondered about the violence with the Protestants and the Catholics in Ireland too. I get upset with some of the things said against Catholics on this site but, I would never even think of resorting to violence this way.

Muslims have always believed in conquering by the sword. There is no love for others in their "Religion."
