You don't need any equipment. What exactly are you checking for?

I have a mutt with sensitive ears. We just bought Veterinarian's Best Ear Cleaner from the store (after checking with the vet) and we clean her ears out. No equipment, no poking far into the ear which can cause damage.

If you feel you need to go deeper then what you can see, it's a good idea to let your vet do that.

when you say check the dogs ears? do you mean cleaning or looking down the ear canal?
cleaning is fine with a special veterinary ear cleaner, place a spurt into the ear, massage and remove using Cotton wool. no cotton buds! also do not do if ear is red, imflammed or causing irritation to animal. get it checked out first!
but not if you want to look down the ear canal. if unqualified looking down will be of no use and damage could be caused.
vets/nurses use an special aural scope to look down to check for ear probs, mites etc.
take he animal to the vet if an ear exam is required.

Flip the ear back, look at it. If you see any dark build up or if there is any smell, it's cleaning time! If there is a lot of build up, a strong smell, or the dog acts like his ears hurt or itch it's Vet time!

Flip back the ear, open your eyes and take a look. Anything beyond that take your lovable pet to the vet.
