I talk to him, read to him, teach him colors and counting and he totally catches on quickly that I am so impressed. How can i tell if my toddler is smart? Is there a test?

I think the rest of these answers are naive. A parent knows when their kid is doing very well. You can look at http://www.pbs.org/parents/childdevelopment/socialemotional-3to4.html. That will give you a good idea of what's "normal" so to speak. Also, look at www.hoagiesgifted.org for more information on identifying gifted kids (even toddlers). There is nothing wrong with having a gifted kid, even if other parents don't "get" it. Your kid is your kid, and all kids are blessings.

I am glad that he is so good in learning. If you felt it was necessary you could send him to preschool at an early age.

OIf you don't want to I would get him computer games so that he could be able to learn new things at the rate he's used to. Just have him on learning programs and such until you find it necessary fdor him to go to school.

And don't worry if he does better than the other students usually the teacher will let you know.

But they are enforcing this "no child left behind" rule, so they might have him in a boring level. You know what you could do is home school him. I think that would get him/her a better education.

Can he do your taxes?

Why is this important? Whether he is "advanced" or not is a relative idea. Keep doing what you're doing, love him regardless (because of course you would) and most of all have fun with him.

If he's exceptional in any one area, you'll know when he knows. He may be a math wiz, but a terrible speller....he may be an artist and can't add 2 plus 2.

Time will tell but in the mean time---Enjoy him! Toddler hood is a blink of an eye.

All two year olds know counting and colors. Nothing to fuss over. Just because he catches on quick doesn't mean he's advanced either. 2 yr. olds have this thing where the moment they see it they pretty much have the hang of it. Maybe he is advanced, but my guess would be he just like all the other 2 yr. olds I know.

I agree with the first answer as well. Pressuring him to keep up the good work will only cause him to regress and not want to learn at all.

He's not that smart. Just great at mimicking and memorizing. There are tests but they don't administer them to toddlers because of the mimicking and memorizing because when they get into school things begin to "level" out and those who SEEMED so advanced in toddlerhood become "average" in school. Besides I've known toddlers who "catch on quickly" just like your son...

whats the point of worrying about it? the last thing a 2 yo needs is pressure of any kind. When he goes to school, you'll know if he's "advanced" and if so they usually have programs to help if he's bored in school. in the meantime just keep teaching him whatever he's eager to learn.

No test at that age. If he is reading on his own by three, that is the test. Otherwise, just regular development.
