My little boy, who is two and a half, has been real sick with persistent coughing.I took him to the doctor today and he said that he has an inflammed infection in his throat, and kind of like symptoms of early bronchitis. The only thing is that I gave my son his antibiotic and his cough medicine and he has not been wanting to eat anything, he maybe ate two or three fries, so then he vomited on the way home.I told my husband to keep trying to feed him something because I am concerned about him drinking too much medicine, and he does drink milk as well, but not eating...Any advice/suggestions.*He does not like Pedialyte or any of those Pedialyte products.

For the sake of your child, please see a doctor if these symptoms persist, I think a yahoo Q&A board is the wrong venue for this question.

Advice is easy bulleted form!

~ Give the medicine exactly as directed unless told otherwise be doctor. Don't stop it without permission from the doc.

~His throat might be sore and he just might not be telling you. I'd suggest fruit juice popsicles or yogurt or soft foods.

~ If he continues to vomit call the doctor immediately. Sometimes it's caused by the medicine and other times it's a symptom.

~If he doesn't continue to vomit then don't get overly worried about the throwing up. My daughter had croup earlier this month and threw up after a violent coughing fit and it is probably just that.

I agree-you need to take your son back to the doctor. But it might be the antibiotic itself that is causing the vomiting. Ask your doctor about changing his medication to something else--there are always options. Generally speaking, kids can go a while without eating (my daughter did what yours did--didn't eat and/or vomited for 6 days) but they can't go very long without drinking. Pedialyte is probably the best thing (breast milk is ok, too, if you are bf at this point), and you can freeze the pops, drink the juice, give it to him a few spoonfuls at a time, even if he's vomiting. But, please, talk to your doctor--even have him paged if you have to. Good luck!

Well it's good he doesn't like Pedialyte because that's not good for him anyway. It's full of sugar!

Anyway, if he's throwing up you need to rest his stomach. Don't feed him anything unless he asks for something to eat. If and when he asks, only give him something small. Start out with a few crackers and then if he can keep it down give him half a sandwich or some soup later on.

As for his throat, just keep doing what the doctor recommended. Give it time and I'm sure it'll get better.

Pedialyte tastes nasty! Theres been a diarhea bug going on here and I got some instant (like kool aid packs) made by gerber. You can get them at any pharmacy. Theres 6 to a box and my kid couldnt get enough! You add 6oz of water for each packet.
Give the medicine as directed, fluids are fine, try putting a little flavored rice cereal in his milk so he can get a little fuller off that.
bananas, jello, rice, pudding, anything that they will eat, is fine, just make sure your pushing the fluids.
Hope he gets better soon.

keep following the instructions that your doctor gave you. Antibiotics will take a little time to work, and he will be ill for a couple of days after you start them. Make sure you keep your son well hydrated, that's more important than feeding him. Give him sips of water, little and often works best. Sugary liquids will keep his energy up. That's also important. Fruit juice is good. If you're really worried, see your doctor again, the internet is full of people with a little bit of knowledge, but to give a useful answer needs someone who knows the full picture.

I wouldnt force him to eat. My son had a similar virus and he had a sore throat, low fever, and nauseus. He did vomit one time, and after 2 days, he was much better and by the 3rd day, he was all the way better. Keep forcing fluids down. That would be better for him than food.Try gatorade. Pedialyte is some nasty tasting stuff, so I usually get gatorade. It tastes better.Dont worry, he'll be fine soon.

It's best to call your doctor and get professional medical help. In the meantime, try to keep the fluids coming (water is best, but maybe some orange juice might help). Stay away from apple juice if he's nauseous. Stay away from Gatorade and milk, etc, too. Stay away from really "hearty" foods (stuff a healthy person might eat). Try some yogurt w/ honey, it might work. Try some soup, or tea. If he doesn't like that, though, you can try to let him have some saltine crackers. Two and a half year olds might like those better. Get better!

just keep him from dehydration.the important thing is to be sure he gets plenty of fluids . a child can go along time with wanting to eat . but make him drink ... milk is better then nothing but it will cause phlegm to build worst . they have pedialyte popsicles you could try , water, tea , koolaid ,gatoraid , juice ... just try any fluids you can get in him . don't worry about the medicine being too much the recommended dose Will be fine .

My son wasn't well at all last week. He was on anti biotics for an ear infection and was throwing up whatever food he was given. He hardly ate for 3 days, but the doctor said aslong as he was drinking fluids, everything was fine.
Aslong as your boy is drinking fluids everything should be fine, but if you are really worried get him checked out.

Hope he feels a little better, i know what your going through my little boy was miserable all last week but now he's back to normal and it is as if he is eating to make up for the days he didn't.

Do not worry at all about feeding him at this point. Do you feel like eating with a scratchy sore throat and chest? This is the time when it is ok to give him whatever he wants to drink as far as sodas, juices, shakes, whatever he will agree to drink. The important thing is keeping him hydrated and washing the bacteria out of his body. Give him jello and popcicles and soups also.
