mouse/rat poison ingestion is serious. the poison prevents blood clotting. the medication given to the animal is given to support the body and help the blood to clot naturally.
if the puppy ingested the poison and is still alive today than the worst is over.
ingestion and absorption will happen over a few hours so that period of time after digestion would of been his most critical time period. vomiting would of been induced if come in sooner after eating - so preventing absorption.
insure the puppy doesn't hurt itself and certainly doesn't cut its self etc for the next few weeks. your vet should keep a close eye on him through reports from you and Willl inform you if concerned.
your puppy is very lucky and this poison would normally of killed the animal. he must of not eaten too much of the poison.
care for him, monitor him and im sure he wil be fine.
the vet wont usually discharge the animal if concerned or has given the puppy a guarded prognosis.

I am sorry to hear of this accident. All I can suggest is that you keep a very close eye on your friend and be in touch with the vet if you think more help is needed.
Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know) and hope for the best. You would be amazed at how strong their systems are. My friend's papillon was recently mauled and almost killed by a big muscle dog, and he pulled through, but for awhile there it could have gone either way. So, think positively and keep in touch with the vet, and hopefully the puppy's strength and determination (and your love) will help him to recover completely. Good luck to both of you.

Mouse poison, as is rat poison usually warfarin, in people med, it is coumidin. Google it. It is a blood thinner, and mice and rats bleed to death when they eat enough of it. You didn't say how big your puppy is, nor when this happened, nor how much of a package he ate....., but if your puppy isn't dead by now, he'll be okay if you finish the meds the vet gave you. And from now on, hon, don't use poisons of any type around dogs -- not snail poisons in your yard, no poisons of any type. Use traps, or the sticky tape for mice.

Rat poison causes internal bleeding. Your vet gave him vitamin K in order to increase blood clotting. Your puppy should be fine, as you jumped right on the problem, the vet gave him appropriate treatment and recommendations for follow-up care.

I am sure that if your doctor believed that your puppy wasn't going to survive, he wouldn't be giving you medications for him. This may be the type of thing that just needs to work out of your puppy's system and the prescription will help that along.
Just keep a close eye on him and call the doctor immediately at anything that is strange.
If you're still unsure, give the doctor a call tomorrow if he has office hours and talk to him regarding your concerns and things to look out for.
With time, I'm sure all will work out fine.
Good luck to you guys.

Give it some time. Your vet will surely inform you off his progress and advise you on the humane thing to do if he doesn't improve.
I'm sorry this happened to you and I hope your puppy gets better.
PS...I hope you have gotten rid of any other poison and scrubbed the areas where you had it.
EDIT, I also wanted to add that your vet should have shown you any lab results and explained them to you.

If your vet is good he has good chances. Ask them how badly he was poisened. I have never gone through this but I know that rat poison does not come in big packages so he will probably be ok. I wish you the best of luck and hope that you make the decision from your heart.

I am so sorry to hear that... I can only wish you and your puppy the best. My prayers are with you both. It depends on what was in the mouse poison. I hope your puppy has a fast and painless recovery.

If he makes it through the first few days he has a very good chance. It really depends on how much he ingested.
Just hang in there. If he suddenly takes a turn for the worse (which he most likely won't do) and you have to make a decision you will know.
Good luck.
