if there is a line, get in line, if there are elderly or small children, let them go first if you can,,,, if you get some on the seat, wipe it off!

I know all of the answers you have received have told you not to make eye contact and don't strike up conversation, but most of the the public restrooms(i live in the south, so maybe "southern friendliness" has something to do with it) I've ever visited are full of friendly people. Women are constantly complimenting each other on their purses or clothing or making a comment about the long wait/drive, etc. Don't stand there with your eyes to the ground, people will think you're shy or uncomfortable immediately, BUT don't stare at people either. So, I'd say to make friendly conversation, but don't go out of your way to converse with people. Most of all, don't worry about the bathroom situation, you'll only be in there 3-5 minutes tops :)

Make sure you don't make a mess- that is by far the most important. Wash your hands, and refrain from making any comments about the bathroom activity of others. Do everything quickly, quietly, and use the air freshener if there is a can.
