On what basis pineapple juice is considered a good substitute for mirin, when making teriyaki sauce? Is it the flavour, is it some substance that is present in both? What is it? If anyone knows any other good substitute, except for sherry, please share.

I suppose so, but you would need to reduce it.

Why bother though? I just bought some mirin out of Tesco so its not hard to come by.

Addition: mirin is quite sweet and sticky. Hence pineapple juice would be acceptable, but the flavour is not quite the same. Mirin has a higher viscosity, hence my suggestion to reduce the pineapple juice.
