Because the socialized ideal is that the man should be taller than the woman... and they start learning that through the media, socialization, etc. as they grow up.
In it's own way, I think it might be the only physical judgement that isn't viewed negatively when evaluating if someone is "dating/ relationship" material. If someone mentions a basis for their non-interest being ethnicity or weight for example, I think more people would view that reasoning as "you shouldn't let those things matter"... but not in the case of male height.
I find it sad (and rather hypocritical) when women complain about being negatively judged based on some aspect of their appearance, and want men to be more concerned about the person inside, but they themselves do the same thing when they judge men based on height. Even in personal ads... you have a lot of women out there that try and make it sound like they are looking for a quality person on the inside and appearances don't matter (don't mind what age you are, if you are overweight, of a different ethnicity) but they tack on that height requirement.
Unfortunately, that is what us short guys have to live with. Meta-analyses of studies concering height and dating success really only have one finding that is consistent across the studies... short men (typically defined as 5'6" and under) are at a statistically significant disadvantage when dating success is concerned. The general finding is that there is a preference for the man to be 2-4" inches taller than the woman.
I'm 5'1", and I actually wouldn't change my height. Being this height taught me at an early age how bad it is (being on the receiving end) to judge others based on physical appearance and just how many people do so. Relationships have been few and far between for me, but I can trust in that when I come across someone interested in me, they want to get to know me for being me, and not just for superficial reasons.

Sorry babe but I have to disagree with you on this! It's the women you are attracted to that aren't attracted to short guys! Short guys are actually very cute to me, with that being said it shows that not all girls are attracted to tall guys. Therefore, I'm more than positive that you will, one day, find a girl that you are attracted to that likes short guys. Good luck!

It's just a matter of preference. Me with a short guy would make it look like he is my son and not my man because I'm short myself.

That is NOT true. My best friend loves short guys. If u're short then find someone who doesn't care that u're short.

I think it might be a subconscious thing. In animals, a larger parter will yield stronger offspring and they will have a better chance of surviving.

I feel silly standing next to a man that is shorter then me. But if he has a strong personality he makes up for it and its not so bad. Then it also disctates what shoes i wear
