That all depends. How many people are you feeding?

Big doesn't always mean protection. I have a 60lb. dog and an 18lb. dog. The 18 pounder is more fierce towards people when no one is home then the bigger one (according to my neighbor who was fixing a window for me while I was at work.)
You need to study different breeds and determine which dog would best suit your lifestyle.
Please don't get a Pit of Rot in the hopes of making it mean.
I would also talk to different trainers in your area (NOT the ones at pet stores, they generally only teach basics) about how much it will cost you to train a guard dog. They'll help you to understand the dog and work with it so that you become the alpa. You don't want a trained guard dog to think he's the boss or you'll be in trouble. A professional trainer can also give you some insight on different breeds.
Remember too, that you can find almost any breed in a shelter. You might consider a mix breed also.
Good luck.

Big dogs eat a lot of food and make bigger poos. Bulldogs are the sweetest dogs in the world. They have gentle funny personalities. Great Danes are also very sweet but they do have a natural protective instinct that is very strong but again, need a LOT of food. A properly trained Doberman is a great protective dog but you do need to invest in EXPERT training by a professional for ANY dog. Don't try to train him on your own.

Choose a German Shepherd! However, be careful about that "big equals protection" thing, because you must be VERY careful not to actually train a dog to protect you. They will naturally! You must be very experienced, or take your dog to obedience classes to train a german shephard. Socialize it well, or it will be aggressive and destructive. REMEMBER! DO NOT train it to protect you! It will do it naturally when you're in trouble! Keep that in mind with all dogs!!!! (unless your a police and professional dog trainer)

My favourite is German Shepard (pure) they are loyal like nothing u've seen. Labrador is awesome too. You want a dog that can be a friend and a guard (depends where u live), German Sheppard is my favourite. Joe passed away one year ago at the age of 11. I cannot start to tell you the things he's done for my family. I miss him so much.

Large dogs are great, but be sure to do your breed research online. Some breeds are more prone to things such as hip dysplasia, a hip bone disorder that causes great pain. It can be 'corrected' for about $4000 (if you catch prior to 10th week), but would require ongoing care as they grow older. Just something to be aware of with the big boys.

German Shepard... even if it is a nice dog just the look of it will bring up thoughts of the highly trained police dogs. That might make some bad people go away.

I would get an Australian Shepard. They are cute and soft, but when it comes to protecting you, they are there. If you are looking for more of a larger dog than that, then I would advise you to get a German Shepard because thay are known to be police dogs, so of course they would be great protection for you! Hope that helps! Good luck!

Don't get a great dane because they are very protective and get very attracted to you to the point where if you have company over they may feel the need to act in an unnatural way.
A German Shepherd may be a good idea...

If you want a good protector, consider the Rottweiler and the English Mastiffs. Both are very intelligent and trainable dogs, who are protective of their home and family.

definetly a st.bernard. they are gentle giants and are very protective. they are good listeners and very eager to learn and easy to train. i dont even have to put my st. on a leash . when ever we go somewhere, no matter how crowded he sticks right to my leg like hes glued there. he is also very affectionate, and wants to be by u all the time ,mine even tries to sit on my lap if i sit down. oh , and he does not eat any more than a lab or shepard. just cause hes bigger dont mean he will eat u outa house and home.
