What I would suggest you do, is talk to her about it, and find out what she thinks first, based on that, then you can identify the problem, you can not make the assumption that because she doesn't know her father she is careless. Its definitely a concern because you are asking for help here, so once you address the issue you will feel a lot better. Identify what it is that you would like her to learn or appreciate about her Italian heritage, then apply it in a very smooth way, for example take her to a vacation in Rome, for a few days. The longer you wait the harder it will be to get her interested if she is starting to block it. If you keep trying and nothing works, let it go when she becomes an adult she might become interested to find out more about her roots.

Greetings!
Heritage is no more than the spirit you instill in your child. Thinking that her greatness or success in life rests in her heritage, black, white, or otherwise is foolish.
The innocense of this child already knows that, thus her not wanting to do anything with it.
So let her grow and explore, and seek her own destiny.
Good Luck

i think you should try to expose her to italian heritage. she may regret later in life not embracing that side of her life. i don't know what you could do to convince her. maybe just let her know how important it will be when she gets older. my mom is half korean and she has never met her mom (she was adopted when she was 6 months old) and i don't know if she'll ever get to meet her mother or visit where she was born. it makes me sad, and i wonder if it makes her sad too.

She is feeling resentment and abandonment. You should encourage, but don't force, her to embrace her Italian roots. These are issues that she needs to deal with. You are raising your daughter the best way that you can, and she is showing her love for you by embracing your ethnic background and traditions. One day she may embrace her other side, but it has to be on her terms. Good luck!

Tell her that being half black and half Italian is the coolest thing I've ever heard because blacks rock and Italians rock even more.

The first question that comes to mind is: What do people assume her heritage is when they first cast eyes upon her? If she appears to be what she considers herself, then there's no disparity in her action or thought. If she portrays herself as being of European descent and she's obviously of multiple or African/Island/Indian backgrounds, then it might cause her some discomfort among certain types of people...

Don't worry about it, she is probably angry that she doesn't have her dad in her life and thinking that it is an italian thing. She'll come to terms with it in her own time.
