why is it that when you get on the elevator and others get on behind you, they expect for you to push the button to the floor where they are getting off on as if they cant push it themselves. there are times when its just me and another person getting on and they'll be like "5th" floor. i know its common courtesy but some people can be so lazy. if they are older than i would do it but not if your fingers work just like mine. just a though.

Next time someone asks you to do that, punch one floor off so the car will stop there first. Chances are that people who expect others to wait on them will get torqued about an unneeded stop.
It works even better if they are not paying attention and miss their floor because they think you've done as they asked.
If you get out before they do, break wind on your way out the door if there are no innocent victims.

There is 'elevator etiquette' one can practice for politeness' sake. Always let people come out before you go in. Always let handicapped or elderly people on/off first. If you are nearest the door sensor, hold the door open until everyone is on or off. Move to the rear to allow other people room to come in if it is crowded. And, if you are next to the panel, ask everyone which floor they want.
The kind of manners our grandparent taught, and took for granted from others, made the world a better place. They are rapidly disappearing. It doesn't hurt to be polite, and often hurts when people are not.
Just a thought.

If another person is standing right next to the buttons, or they are closer to them, it might seem rude for me to reach across them and push the button. In that case I might ask them to push the button for me.

i think it would depend on who is closest to it, if you get on first, your normally standing right in front of the buttons, it would be rude to reach in front of you to push one,,,,,,, if you dont want to make others selection, make your own then move to the other side of the elevator

I would ask someone to push the button for me rather than be rude and reach in front of them, otherwise I would do it myself.

So they don't have to reach over people. It's just a common courtesy. I guess I don't understand why it's such a big deal to you? If this is the worst thing going on in your life, you are very lucky indeed. Count your blessings.

if you are standing in front of the buttons they don't want to reach in front of you. if you don't want to push them, before the door opens, move over to the other side.
