Or do only the DVD camcoders, play on a DVD player? I'm confused. Thanks for the help.

No, mini-dv is a type of tape, but i think some camcorders do record on DVD.

A mini DV camcorder records onto a little tape. The DVD camcorders are the only ones that record straight onto DVD.

Only dvd camcorders record on mini dvd's and can be played in a dvd player. I have a Sony one and I love it. The quality of the recordings are fantastic.
