spray the areas where he messes with orange scented stuff or the special stuff from pet shops.
move his litter trays to these areas.
most cats dont like being watched when the go to the loo so maybe you need to reposistion his trays to somewhere more private.
the cat might not be happy or stressed. has their been lots of changes in your home recently?
if he hasnt been neutered get it done as male cats are less likely to mark and spray.

Is he messing just about in the same place? Sometimes (most the time) we put the kitty litter where WE think the kitty litter should go, right? Kitties have different ideas about the proper places to do their business. If he is messing beside the couch, for example, then put the kitty litter beside the couch. (Ewww, gross! I know). Remember, this is not forever. Every other day, scoot the litter box 3-4 inches away from the couch, closer to the area you want him to potty. Even cats, as smart and evil as they are, can be trained. (Although, they will never admit to it).
But, you didn't give all the details here. Is he neutered? If not, then he needs to be very soon, or he will piss on everything you own for the rest of his kitty career, which, doubtless, won't be very long, right? Sometimes, even after they are neutered, (if it happened a little later in their lives) cats will continue to piss on your furniture and clothes. For that, there are some obnoxious sprays that are supposed to repel them. Now you will think I am a horrible person, but I agree with sly..... you have to train them, and a swatting is not the end of the world for them. But, if you get too mean about discipline, they will become even more deviant, and just piss when you aren't home..... yeah, they are that cunning.
Just a head's up: If your kitty is young right now, then he will stop eventually and mellow out. It could be that he is a little nervous and not exactly sure what is his. If the opposite is true, if your cat is aging, then, they lose sight of the rules--kind of like 70 yr.-old people... they need you love, care, and compassion after giving you so much during their little lives.

Use a regular litter box for it. put the cat and litter box in a room and keep the door closed for a couple of days. Let it stand on the litter when you go to feed/ check on it. He will have privacy and be able to see his suroundings.

has your cat ever went potty in the litter box? Scoop up some of it's poop and put it in the litter box. That's how I trained my cat to potty in the litter box. Make sure the cat knows where the box is.

there are a lot of possible answers to this question, and most of them are going to begin with "take your cat to the vet". cats do this for both behavioral and medical reasons, and until you rule out the medical ones, you will not know which one is the problem.

Get some tissue and rub it along his cheeks / jaw (the area he normally rubs up against your leg), then rub the scent which comes off onto the tissue onto the areas where he tends to spray. This tends to stop them as he shouldn't want to spray on an area that he's marked as his territory.
