We lost one of our dogs in September to illness. You get over the death of a pet the same way you get over the death of a loved one - time. Don't try to forget your dog. A new puppy will give you another loving companion, but don't try to replace the one you lost - you can't.
Our beloved Teddy is buried in the backyard, as are all the others we have lost over the years. Allow yourself time. It will get better.

That is a good question, I have been asked that many many times.
I have learned that a death of a pet can be worse than loosing a family member. The unconditional love, the constant presence, the loyality, the connection between the dog and family is different than the connection you have with any other member of your family. Getting over the loss is a time thing. Getting another dog can not replace the one you lost. You don't replace your family members when they die so replacing you dog right now is not a good idea. The temperment won't be the same, there is just no way to replace your dog.
I had a doberman that I had put through training to be a personal protection dog. We spent all of our time together. She went with me where ever I went. The hours of training were intense and we developed a friendship that is unexplainable. It got to where we knew exactly what the other was going to do at any given time. She was very well trained (police training plus extras). She lived to be 10 years old and I had had her since she was 6 weeks old.
When she died I grieved for two years and could not get over her death. I cried and cried so ofter I thought I'd never get over her being gone.
Give yourself some time.
Get a puppy only if YOU want to.
I am sorry for your lose, I feel your pain.

I really feel for you!
I lost an old dog I had for almost 11 years, absolutely broke my heart. I loved him so much. I went out and got another dog a week later and it helped so much withe the healing process. Unfortunately, he passed away about 4 months later.
Broke my heart again, he had a rare condidtion come up. I once again went out a week later i got a puppy. I have had him about 5 weeks and have bonded really well and although it doesn't take the place of the old dog - it gives you something new to focus on and give/receive love. All my dogs were male German Sheperds, it helped getting a new dog that reminds you of the one that passed. So my answer is YES - go out and get another puppy/dog right away!!!
Good luck and again, I am so sorry - I know how painful it is to lose your best friend.

I know that this is really hard. It was hard for me when my dog got his back legs ran over and we had to put him to sleep. I cried like a baby!!! When my dog passed on I waited about 6 months before I got another animal so that I could get over the fact that I lost one of my best friends and made peace!!! Because it doesn't matter if you get the same exact dog it will never replace the friend that you once had. 6 months later I got a cat. Good Luck!!!!

Hi,
I had to have my best freind put down last monday 20th Nov. It truly broke my heart. And I don't mind telling you, I cried for 3 days straight. Everyone tells me to get another and that it will help ease the pain. I didn't want to, but my hubby bought a staffordshire puppy home today. She's like my other dog in so many ways. And I have to be honest, its really helping.
Best of luck in whatever you decide

Loosing a dog is really hard because they truly are your best friends. This may sound silly, but wouldn't your dog want you to be happy? Of course she would! Think about the happy times you had, but if thinking about her makes it worse, then don't. If you feel you are ready for a new dog, go for it. Remember, there is always room in your heart and a new dog will never take the place of your old one. I'm sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear about your dog. Perhaps you can purchase a book called Grieving the Death of a Pet by Betty J. Carmack. It may help you cope. I would suggest getting a new puppy after a few months.

I'm so sorry. A new puppy just might help ease the pain but it's only time will fix your grieving heart. I think a new pup is a great idea. Nothing can ever replace your girl but another one to love and make a fuss of does help...I know.

i'm so sorry for you and your family. my dog died in April and i'm still not over it. each day is better, but still pain. talk about her, make a scrapbook, if you think you could handle having another dog this soon, go for it! i did. it won't be a replacement but it helped me by taking my attention and having the same "doggie time" in my day. i finally love our new dog. he's not nearly as smart but he sure is funny.remember everyone grieves differently. DO NOT pay attention to insensitive people. PEACE AND GOOD LUCK

So sorry . Time will ease your pain. And a new puppy would help take your mind of her death, and put joy back with the things they do that will brighten your day. Go get a puppy. God bless you and your family.
