I am a divorced single dad of a 2 and 6 year old. I want to find more things for us to do. Reading can be one thing, but we never do it. Partially because I know they will not sit still. Perhaps I cannot try and read the same story to both of them due to the age difference. I could take the 2 year old asided and (*learn*) start there. Good idea? I am going to Borders today when i pick them up, I have them every weekend, and get a good 2 year old book he would like. Are the books that ADD sounds, with the squares you push a good idea? They ARE fun, but in the end does it ruin the idea of reading to them?

Be very animated - - point to the pictures, follow the words with your finger. Reading in a semi-monotone voice usually bores the little ones, but if you're animated in your words and actions while you're reading, you'll be more apt to catch their attention. Find books with lots of colors, my kids like the ones with the "doors" that you flip up and have a picture under them. This way they can participate too.

My son is 18 months and it's very hard to get him to sit still and listen to a story. The best thing to do with kids that young is to read to them no matter what. My son likes to wander around the room while I read and I'll ask him to come turn pages or to point out objects on the page that he knows. Big simple pictures and words that rhyme are GREAT for 2 year olds.

For your 6 year old... you should be able to ask her to sit still and have her listen adn understand what you want her to do. Sitting still for a story shouldn't be a problem for her age. If she's not doing it it's probably because she's not interested in the story. Is she doing any beginner reading herself? Maybe a beginner reader book with simple words that you two can read together would be good.

it all depends when you read to them, if its bed time settle them into bed and read to them with a soft soothing voice, make sure they are in seperate beds as if they are together they are likely to play, if its day time reading sit the 2 yr old on yr lap and let her get involved with the turning of pages and try to pick a book with plenty of pictures because they will follow the story via the pictures, with the 6 yr old she should be in school by now and learning how to read so let her do a bit of the reading, she will benefit from the reading then.

by the way good to see you read to the kids rather than puting on tv and just sittin them infront of it which nowadays seems to be the norm.

A two year old doesn't sit still period. The best time to read to children is at bedtime. I suggest you get down on the floor and actually PLAY with your kids while they are there.

It's hopeless, kids that age are very prone to ants in their pants
