It really depend on the state of one's illness. If it's a simple cold - i'm sure it's possible to perform a prayer (having one now LOL).
But i assume u're talking about gravely ill people .... there are ways to perform a prayer even when ''tied to bed''
Remember the Book Of Job (Eyub PBUH)? When he thought he was completely parallysed, he begged God to keep his tongue healthy so he can say La Illahe Ilallah.
In islam, good intention is sometimes more worthy than 50 deeds.

I am a muslim woman, and as you know, we're not supposed to pray when menstruating or just after we've had a baby. For both men and women, it's not allowed to pray after sexual intercourse until each has had a bath. If you are sick or taking medication, you should still try to pray. If you can't do the motions, you can do a modified version by sitting down and just saying the words and mimicking the motions. You don't have to do all movements. My mother in law had diabetes so badly she couldn't do the entire prayer, so she would freshen up and say it while laying down, because she was in constant pain. Or, if you have missed prayers, you can make them up either with the noon and afternoon prayer together, or all prayers done before midnight if you missed that many. Don't make it your habit, though, because that's not good.

If you are too sick and you are not strong enough to pray at the mosque then you can pray at home and if you've missed a prayer then you can make up that prayer but it has to be at a certain time. One should still pray if he is taking medicine or he is sick but it depends on how sick that person is. if he has a cold then he has to pray. Because there's a certain age where all teh daily prayers are compulsary. Because ou rProphet has said "when your child is 7 years old ask him to pray, but when he is 10 years old beat him to pray".

Islam is not a religion which enjoins duties beyond a human's abilities. There are many cases which may make a Muslim not able to pray the daily prayer. If the sick person is able to pray Salaat by sitting, s/he should do that. If s/he can't even do that way, s/he try lieing on the bed, by gesturing.

Yes, if the physical condition is such that it's impossible to pray even by sitting or lying gesture, then the prayers should be made up after getting well.
Allah knows best.

You know Muslim prayers require physical activity. So If one cannot perform it because of illness, he can pray while setting, if this is hard too.. he can pray with moving hands only, when even that is difficult, he can pray by moving eyes.
If you're sleep even if you're healthy, and missed the prayer time, you can perform your prayer when you wake up.

My husband had a herniated disk and he would sit up to pray- not stand and bend over... he told me that you should do what is in your power to do if you are faithful. God knows your limits and your intentions are counted and known.

You are obligated to pray 5 times a day whether you are sick or not and you cannot make those prayers up later!

Good question for a confusing religion. I assume that the sick are exempt from prayers, though. But will they have to make it up? Probably. Muslim fear of hell is great because they have no assurance of heaven aside from martyrdom.
