Come to think of it yes. Terribly odd. Also bread. I mean who though adding a B to read would fill stomachs.

Porridge is just a word like pizza, spaghetti or any other name of food. Big Mac now that is a weird name.

It is an odd name. I moved from the USA (where they call it oatmeal), to the UK (where they call it porridge). Since it's made from oats.. the logical name is oatmeal because it's a meal made from oats! Why is this a concept not everyone can grasp? LOL.

I must say that I am not entirely sure porridge is. It it cream of wheat, oatmeal, "grits" or what?
