The doctor has been unhelpful. Does anybody know how this condition can be treated successfully? And does anybody know the name of this condition, so that we can seek further help on the internet?

My Mother had this problem and I have now developed it.

Find a new Doctor and get a simple thyroid test done. An enlarged thyroid will wrap around the esophagus and inhibit swallowing.

Mine has turned out to be a yeast allergy that I have developed in the last 2 or 3 years. Fresh yeast bread will close my throat while the bite is in my month before I even swallow it.

Have the thyroid test, it is a simple blood test.I have both going on, low thyroid and the yeast allergy.

Stop flour products, yeast and dairy for a week or so. See if anything happens while she is off these items.

They say every 7 years our body changes, I developed this allergy after 65 years and never having allergies before.

Good Luck to your Mom, I know How she feels.

This sounds similar to something I have - sometime I just can't make myself swallow the last mouthful of a meal, I know this is irrational, but it doesn't bother me too much. However, for other, similarly irrational fears such as this, I have found hypnotherapy to be extremely effective. Many people are skeptical about hypnotherapy, but it is nothing like the kind of stage hypnosis you see on TV. A course of hypnotherapy in teh UK would cost around £50 a session, 2 - 5 sessions should be enough to completely overcome this. Basically, its done through relaxation and visualisation techniques, if you can learn to put yourself into a relaxed state and visualise yourself behaving the way you want to behave, then you can do this in reality. Believe me, this really does work, and has been used to overcome all sorts of fears. From personal experience, I would highly recommend it.

Have you tried eating much smaller bites of food? And also chewing each bite many times so that it kind of slides down your throat rather than having to swallow a ball of food? Also you might try to drink some liquid with your food to get it down smoother.

When I was a kid, I develop my fears. I ask myself, "What if you can't swallow your saliva?" and the next moment I couldn't. I lost the rythm and couldn't control it. My throat was wet dry. I ran towards my mom and asked her help me. She couldn't do anything. But like in 3 minutes everything was back to normal. I use to have a fear of dying of thirst because I didn't trust my body to tell me when I was dehydrating. To summarize everything I think it is fear. Tell her to calm down and not worry. It's just fear. I hope this helps her.

sounds serious - obviously suffering from some paranoia or a some kind off delusion.

See another doc - or go to mental health walk in centre.

Get it sorted, as its clearly a problem
