A cat hisses for the same reason any animal hisses - it's afraid and trying to give a warning at the same time.

The cat may have smelled old urine from another animal on the carpet or even a mouse track. Unless the cat attempts to urinate in that spot or tries to digs there you can let it go.

If you have ever had a previos pet before this cat then your kitty is just smelling the other animal and it doesn't like the fact that there was another animal here before it. Or if you've just moved into this house then the previos owner might havve had a cat or a dog and the cat is smelling that.

It may have smelled another animal or scent that was on someones shoe when they walked on the carpet. He was trying to threaten whatever it was he smelled to stay away from him.
