If by 'churches' you mean religious denominations, I'd say it is upwards of 30,000 now... and still growing!
But as far as church buildings or edifices, I'd say the RCC would have the biggest and most widespread franchise of them all.
It's something like a church or two for "every diocese"... which covers an administrative territory within a community, a [subdivision] village, a part of a small town, or a few city blocks.
And there are over 1.1 billion Catholics today so go figure the number of churches they have...

Way too many. I know an area in my city that has four churches at every corner and at least two in the middle of each block. It is freaking ridiculous. The residents can't figure out why their property taxes are high because they never realize that the churches are tax free but still get services.

if you are referring to buildings, more than we need. if you are referring to religions, seven major, and thousands of minor ones.if you are referring to individuals, their are as many as there are people.

Well, if you mean Christian churches...there are three choices...
One Catholic Church
A couple eastern orthodox churches
25,000+ Protestant denominations....
Jesus prayed for us to be one....
