Not to put the pressure on your relationship but marriage is probably the best way of doing it. Once you're wed it's just a case of getting a 'Wife' visa from your nearest Embassy or Consulate in the US, although you will have to show sufficient income that your wife will not need to rely on public funds for the first two years she's here i.e until her 'wife' status can be converted to permanent residence. Incidentally if you want to be married in the UK she should get a 'Marriage' visa which will give her permission to stay for up to 6 months, in which time the marriage should take place. Thereafter she can apply here for 'Wife' status. If you marry while she's in the UK as a visitor she will have to return to the US and get a wife visa and then return to join you here.
If marriage isn't where you're at just yet your girlfriend could look to find a job here that she could get a work permit for - these tend to be fairly specialist positions though. Or if she's still got some studying to do she could look at enrolling on a course in the UK and come here on a student visa...
It can be an awkward situation - hope it works out for you.

The only way is marriage,my sister-in-law studied in America and met her partner there. After my sister-in-law finished her studies she came back home and she tried to get her partner over here but she couldn't get the visa(there gay) in the end they had to apply for a visa to marry and they accepted straight away. Your partner will need to write to the embassy in new york and apply. Oh yes they wasnt turned down in the first place due to them being gay,i told you they was gay so you could understand what i was writing....

DONT PANIC.
You do not have to get married.1st you must get her a visa for multipl entry, then after a certain ammount of time you get another visa saying you are living to gether etc, etc, etc.
but everytime you apply for these visas you will have to fill out many forms and these forms will be scrutinised,so my advice is be truthfull and things will happen a lot more smoothly.
