I think the answer to your original question is yes.
As far as the other two questions go, I'm not completely sure that I understand.
But he may be trying to make you jealous or have to prove your feelings for him. He may have felt ignored or useless in the relationship, so before he spends anymore time or energy on it, he'll know for sure how you feel.
A lot of times, us men will cut our nose off to spite our face in an attempt to gain the truth. It backfires and then we come crawling back begging for another chance. Sometimes we just get fed up and simply distance ourselves from the whole thing hoping that something else will come along and we can immerse ourselves in it before we ever have to deal with the other again.
No matter what the case is, if you care about him, let him know in no uncertain terms. If he warms right up to you, then you'll know you did the right thing. If he is still cold and distant, then forget him because either he doesn't feel the same about you or he has issues which render him incapable of dealing with it. Cut your loss with nothing else lost.
Men have feelings too, whether most women realize it or not, but we don't always wear them on our sleeve like you do.
Don't let pride, yours or his, keep you from at least attempting to get to the bottom of the problem. Remember, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I have seen this happen to many people very many times in my life... it's almost as if the general conception of male confidence is a total hoax. It's not only pride but it's insecurity to the fullest.

well what makes you think he fell otherwise? you will never know until you ask him to be straight up with know matter if he thinks it's going to hurt you or not. You need to do the same with him as well.
