put antibotic on it or numming cream. I did that too, I was trying to see if I could flip the toothpick around like that guy at the bowling alley does on the movie, Uncle Buck and it got stuck straight up and stabbed the top of my mouth and then poked my bottom gum and I know its painful!

You could have an infection or, hopefully, you have just traumatized the gum tissue.

The best thing to do is rinse with a solution of salt and warm water. This will reduce bacterial growth that could cause an infection (if you don't have one already.), or aid in the reduction of an existing infection. Please don't use peroxide! Peroxide is known to cause more problems. It can burn your gum tissue among other things.....

I know this may sound odd...but, usually, it is recommended to brush the inflamed area thoroughly to reduce inflammation. I am not sure about your case, however. If you suspect the area is infected....go for it! If you believe the area to just be traumatized....I wouldn't recommend this. (But please keep brushing your teeth around this area.)

To reduce the pain, take ibuprofen (3 or 4 tablets). Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory. Apply a topical anesthetic to the area. Ora gel should do the trick.

The best way to apply the topical and avoid a numb throat is to: Dry the area with a piece of gauze and apply a minimal amount. A little will go a long way.

Please stop using tooth picks! They shouldn't be called toothpicks anymore! They are not good for your teeth. Floss is your best option to remove food from in between your teeth.

You should floss at least once a day anyway, to remove debris that will cause cavities and aid in the protection against gum disease.

If the inflamation persists or becomes worse, please visit your dentist to have the area evaluated.

Hi,
The first thing I need to advise you on is: DO NOT RINSE WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE!! That will make your gum worse. Start rinsing with warm salt water. Use about one half teaspoon of salt to an eight oz glass of water. Rinse two or three times a day. Don't chew foods in the area of the injured gum. Avoid real spicy, salty, high citric acid foods. Eat bland foods for a few days. Brush very, very soft in that area. Take Motrin. If after 3 days the gum is not better, go to the dentist. You may have something stuck under the gum, food or a splinter. Don't try to dig it out yourself, you could make it 100 X's worse. Good luck.
ps..dont use anymore toothpicks, use floss.

Rinse your mouth with Hydrogen Peroxide a couple of times a day. Hold it in your mouth and slosh it around. It will foam and probably burn a little but it will disinfect the little wound from the toothpick and that infection is most likely what is causing you the pain.
