In a non-electronic hopper, the paintballs sometimes bunch up and get stuck and the hopper won't feed paintballs to the gun. An electronic hopper has a small paddle inside the spins and keeps the paintballs from getting stuck, so you have a continuous feed of paintballs to the gun.

A non-electronic hopper, or gravity hopper, uses as its name, gravity to feed the paintballs. For markers that shoot fast than about 7 bps (balls per second), gravity hoppers are NOT RECOMMENDED.

There are electronic hoppers for faster-shooting guns. One type has a paddle that keeps spinning to load the paintballs in. Such examples are the Viewloader Revolution or Viewloader Evolution 2 and 3.
And then there are the force-feeding electronic hoppers. These consistantly feed paintballs down instead of a hopper. These are usually the most recommended types of hoppers because these rarely chop because these have eyes or an anti-chop system of some sort.
