There is honor in everything and your opponents in life are worthy of respect regardless of their position in life.

So true. We must accept all races, and let them each prosper in their own way. Also, we must look at each individual of the race, and not catagorize the whole race as one. I know I've strayed from the main point of the quote here, but I really like this quote and the thoughts it provokes. So true, thank you for sharing this wonderful citation.

Amen! This quote about the dignity of work reminds me of another:
The society which scorns excellence in plumbing as a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy...neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.
John W. Gardner (1912 - 2002)

well, it doenst make much sense to me now, but u have to think about the time period when it was said. Washington lived in the era after the civil war, when voting and such just became legal for black americans, but white people tried to do anything to prevent blacks from excercising their rights. so Washington felt that blacks should simply work and worry about becoming employable so they could make money for their familes instead of going to college and focusing on higher education. so as u can see, the quote doesn't have much validity these days. hope that helps!

You mean Booker T. Washington? (no Rs in his first name)
While there is an element of truth in the quote you mentioned, it is also a very narrow minded and self-serving quote. Surely, there are other field that are as important as poetry and in no way, appreciation of poetry is a requirement for a civilization to florish.

I believe in it very much..If a person has decided that they are going to put every effort into a port-a-potty cleaning job that they can, then there is almost more dignity in it than a lawyer who has just gotten their job because they had the money.

It's ok. It certainly is something to think about, but if i were going to name meaningful quotes that i appreciate, this would not be on the list.
