it depends on your definition of witch. if you're catholic, withches were anyone who didn't fit in, regardless of what that person believed or disbelieved. it was very common to condemn people for witchcraft when all they were was different than those around them. women, especially those who had offended someone for something which wasn't anything to be offended about were labeled witchesa for nothing more than being different. men were often condemned for the same reason, as well as because they had something someone else wanted, such as a wife, a plot of land, or an animal someone wanted but wasn't able to buy.
others were condemned, just so the one who made the charge could feel superior.
there was no defense once charged. under torture, you confessed to stop the pain, then you were executed for confessing.
there were some who were tried and tested in a manner which killed you, before you could prove your innocence by dying. once dead, you were declared innocent, but it was too late to save your life.
are there real witches? only if you believe in them.

Yes. And Gerald Gardner did not invent witchcraft. He started a new religion and part of it has witchcraft in it. A lot of ancient witchcraft is merely superstition... such as a more modern song that is sung by kids when it rains "Rain... Rain... Go Away... Come Again... Some Other Day" or throwing salt over your shoulder when you spill it... backtracking when a black cat crosses your path. The "evil eye". But outside of fragments archeologists have found, there isn't much to show exactly what Witchcraft was even in ancient times... unless you look to Egypt.

It depends on your religion and what you consider a witch. I have a large amount of family members from New Orleans, and Voodoo is big there. some people in my family practice (i keep away from that stuff). There are certain things that just can't be explained and are simply just supernatural, so yes they do exist.

Panacea, first of all, witchcraft existed as far back as 25000 b.c. so I seriously doubt it could have been copied from modern satanism in the 1970's,beyond that if you've ever read of any of LaVey's books(which I doubt you have),you could tell he has a strong contempt for peaceful,Nature witches, thirdly ,I feel it is a high crime to promote ignorance to spread your religious beliefs more effectively.
