I've just started attending a digital photography course and I've an assignment to do over christmas to take photo whilst using the skills and techniques I've learned. I am still an amateur and I was wondering what would be considered as a good subject matter?I am open to all suggestions and would like to hear from people who've more experience in digital photography>

What makes a great photo is the person behind the camera.
If you have to ask this question, you will never be a great photographer.
Whether digital or otherwise, you have to have the natural eye, which means that YOU have to have the imagination to be able to see the photograph before you pick up your camera.
Therefore, no suggestions for you.

Go to your local downtown area and find some
Christmas scenes. People shopping, Christmas trees, lights,
anything that looks good to you. When you get back to the class
I'm sure you pics will be as good as any of the other students.
Shoot whatever you like remember you are in this class to learn.
Have fun!!!

its all about angle, time, light, and distance. since you have a digital dont be afraid to take a picture from a few (0-10) meters away. most cameras can zoom to 5.0x and those squggles on my picture became words when i zoomed in. as for light, you need to decide yourself. angle is pretty easy, dont make him/her look fat or anerexic. the time of day will affect light.if you live in kansas city or any other city that has stuff like a crown center or ****, just go out and take pictures of the plaza lights, the giant chrismas tree. stuff like that. i hope i didnt write all this for nothing.

Learn what "depth of field" is and how to use Fstops. When taking pictures put the sun at your back and have the object of your picture in focus; don't cut off the heads, arms, or legs of people in the background. Try to make every picture you take a good picture and don't waste film. After taking lots of good pictures you'll know how to take great pictures.
