For the last 3 years, the US Army and US Marine Corps have been using women in combat in Iraq, due to military necessity - even though, on paper, this is illegal. These women soldiers have proved in action that all the sexist stereotypes that "women aren't suited for combat" are incorrect.

Should the Department of Defense catch up with the reality on the ground, and open combat assignments to women? Or should they continue the hypocracy of assigning women to non combat MOS's, but having them actually fighting?

Women should be eligible to serve in any assignment in the military that they are capable of performing. End of story. The DOD will eventually figure that out.

Actually women have been in combat roles for longer than just OIF and OEF. The MP corps is considered a type of infantry role. Many women that are in the MP corps serve on the front line. There are female medics as well.. SO, not every job in the military that women can be in is a non combat job.

spyderman, I hate to disagree with you. BUT females in the MP corps are in the streets in Iraq doing the same job their male counterparts do.

Starry eyes, that isnt going to happen.. Trust me there are more men that can do that than women.

Speaking as a women having been in the military.
They have been talking about this ever since the Vietnam war .When I was in.
I personally was here in the states and was grateful for that.
Even though I worked in a weapon's room for My MOS. I still feel it comes down to the women if she is suited for combat.

I personally could have handled that but that was because of my upbringing and training prior to military service . Other women are not suited and should not be in combat .

There are some of us that know how to react and others that don't in the event of danger. Some of us are better than men in this regard because of the basic fear instinct built into us I call it our Mommy fear or instinct. I feel a lot of men have not been giving this gift of instinct. We as females just know when dangers about us.

So to answer your question I think it should be a case by case basics.

You are kidding me right? Hypocracy? The only role these female soldiers are doing is standing guard or walking a post within there base/camp. They are not going out in patrols or standing watch on the street. And it's been more than 3 years that they have been doing this. 2004 I was discharged after 12 years in and had 6 tours overseas in certain areas where we just used any warm body to fill a post.
What's really bad is that people like you take the media for the truth and go ranting and crying to everyone about how messed up things are. Get a weapon in your hand and a pack on your back. See what it's like first hand rather than have the media make up your mind for you.

Sorry to tell you women have not been in combat they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Women are not patrolling the the streets of Iraq .I have friends over there and women are not doing any combat if it happens that the convoy gets hit they see it ,But are not psychically doing it so get your facts straight.

not all men can do the hard jobs other men can do. a guy 5'5 and 120lbs ain't huff in no marine around. If you want to see a woman in combat look at some of the north v.c. hop fully they are all dead though. some of the means bad est warriors in the world have been women.

um, most women dont have the strength to perform as men do. Picture a female medic, 5'2" trying to carry a 6'1" 200lbs soldier out of a combat zone. not going to happen. yet there are female medics. not to say they cant shoot a weapon, but as the other post said.. they should be able to do what they are capable of. also, hygiene issues are also a problem for women in deployments. what combat roles are you referring to? being in a combat zone, doesnt actually mean you are in combat. Get ambushed in a convoy doesnt count either.

I personally do not think women should be allowed in combat. I'm not saying that they can't do it, but I do think it is a distraction for the men fighting along side them. I think men also have more of a killer instinct then women
