I've live by the phrase "there's no such thing as divorce, only murder". While that's quite a dramatic statement, if everyone thought that way, there'd be less divorces, and more kids coming home to mom AND dad. With that said, I have to ask you, if this person is the love of your life, why are you ending it? Yeah, it's none of MY business, but I don't often hear people saying that they're breaking up with the love of their life. Pretty sad, for you and for them. I would see what the problem(s) was and see if there's a way to work it out. Too many people think that having a relationship is easy, when it's the hardest thing you can do. No one's perfect. And if you think that there's someone out there who is, you're dreaming! Think about it...you're not perfect...and the person you're having a relationship with isn't perfect...that makes two imperfect people trying to make something work. Sounds pretty hard, doesn't it? In fact, it's almost impossible, unless you both work on it...together. Now, there's a few situations that are deal breakers...like physical abuse...drug & alcohol abuse...and someone who will not keep their pants on with other people. Those are all people to stay away from because they don't know how to have a relationship with anyone, including themselves! In my 29+ years of marriage, I've experienced some really tough times. But, we worked it out, because we both realized we were imperfect people living in an imperfect world. We all screw up. We're no prize either, so to think that everything will always be smooth sailing, with happily ever after attached is just a fantasy. So, if this person is truly the love of your life, unless he's one of the deal breakers, I would see if it can be worked out. Something attracted you two together. It might be worth saving...if you do the work. Do some self-inventory first, to see if you're part of the problem or part of the solution. That's something that's often overlooked, when people split. People don't think about their own part in the break-up. If you don't do this, you'll just end up repeating the dance, going from one bad relationship to another. Hope all works out for you. <*)))><

Apparently they are not the love of your life if you are telling them that it is over.

I agree with farmer... if they are the love of your life, it wouldn't be over. However, as quickly, as gentley and as kindly as possible would be the way to break up with someone.

Don't blame him, be gentle, but be firm. Be prepared to answer every question he has. And finally don't expect him to be your friend once it is all over.
