I prefer california wines and feel lucky to live in an area blessed with many fine wineries. Best buys will be at larger liquor stores. Read descriptions and consider what the wine will be served with, sometimes the store has knowlegeable staff who can help you and the store may have little blurbs about the wines in thier sales displays. Unfortunately it's hard for a wine novice to pick thier way through the amazing offerings. In general - don't drink wine from boxes or with screw top lids. It should have a real cork, not a plastic one, reds should be aged longer than whites. The better wines tend to cost more, but I've tried some expensvie ones I just didn't like so cost isn't a good guide. Kenwood is a very realiable winery and I think that even thier inexpensive table wines are drinkable. Spottswood, Ferrari Carrano and Silver Oak are my favorites, but are very expensive. Good luck!

Like it's been said above...taste is subjective and wine is no exception. There is no such thing as "the best". Your best bet would be to do some on-hand research. Go to a few wine tastings and write down what you really like. With friends coming over, offer a variety like a merlot, shiraz, pinot noir, cab. sauv., zinfandel, chardonnay, gewerstraminer (I'm not even attempting to spell that correctly). Then, write down some of their favorites and keep an ongoing list of things to try.

Wine is a taste preference like anything else. Some prefer reds, others whites and some like Zinfadel or pink coloured wines. If you are having friends over I would suggest you get a bottle of each. The best value for the buck with wine I believe are bottles ranging from $10-$15 per bottle. The most popular reds are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Some popular whites are Chardonnay ( please note my name....lol), Sauvignon Blanc and Chablis. A white Merlot is that pink colour and very good for the rose kind of wine. Good luck with your party and great wine tasting to you!
