Hi there! Lingala is a very beautiful language, but I doubt that you can learn it properly outside Central Africa. It's rather phonetic, so you say it as you pronounce it, although there are tones, which means you sort of have to sing it. a vowel with an acute accent (á) means you have to make a high sound, a circumflex (â) means you have to say-- in this case, a-- high, and then drop it low; a caron (ǎ) means that you have to start the vowel with your voice low and then raise it higher. It's sort of difficult to explain without speaking it aloud!
Here are some phrases:
Navandaka Na (place) - I live in (place)
Nalingi yo - I love you.
Okei Wapi? - Where are you going?
Moninga - friend
mobu ya sika - New year
Vanda awa. - sit here
Benga ngai - call me!
Zela! - wait
Hello - Losáko
Good Morning, Afternoon, Evening - Mboté
Good Night Butú elámu
How are you? Sángo níni?
Fine, thanks Malámu, melesí.
And you? Na yo?
Goodbye Kendéke malámu
See ya later! Tokomónono na nsíma

most people from the DRC speak a good command of french. lingala is just their mother tongue. unless you want to impress your inlaws you can just as well learn from your fiancee how to speak lingala. or rather learn french if you want, because as much as i know there is no one in DRC who can not speak french.good luck

From your fiancé. I presume they come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly known as Zaïre. So French would be an easier option - but you may have left it a bit late for that too.
