Biologically, there is a very small period of time during which the egg is in there. This is exactly the time when the egg happens to be in there and ready to receive.
However, most females who ask this question are thinking that they can "count days" as a method of birth control. Since they simply don't KNOW exactly WHEN the egg is there and ready to receive, they must give it a much longer window. Your egg may only be ready to be fertilized for two days, but you don't know WHICH two days, so in order to be safe, you have to assume it's there any day except maybe immediately after your period ends.
By the way, did you know the technical word doctors use to describe women who count days?
"Mothers."

Your teacher is right. One can only get pregnant during their fertile period, which is 1-3 days. However, if you have sex a day or two before that fertile period, and the sperm live...
You cannot, however, get pregnant any time of the month. I know this for a fact, because I had to try for 2 years to get pregnant with my second child. I learned everything I could about the body.
