1 Corinthians 13:13
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Charity is manifest from love.

Did you know that there is more than one definition for 'love'? And that there is more than one kind of love? Many languages, including both Greek & Hebrew (which the Bible was written in), even have more than one word in their language for our one simple English word 'love'. But either way, love is an emotion, not an action. Emotions produce actions, which means actions can not be greater than the emotion that moves you to them. Charity isn't always unselfish giving - people also give charity out of a sense of obligation or out of egotism because it makes them look good. What matters isn't an act of charity itself, it's the motive behind it.

Naturally anybody or anything looking for big money will toot charity. But is it really charity when someone dumps money into the collection basket ?
Charity is when you give, but expect nothing in return. Those who give to their church expect a front seat in "heaven" for their donation. That's like buying a ticket to the concert in advance. It's strictly business.

you will notice that in the kjv Paul writes charity is kind, charity is patient, charity is... and so on. but in other translations they are writen as love is kind, love is patient, love is.. and so on. the reason for this is that in the Greek in which it was written, love is an action. therefore a good translation of what love is would be charity. that's how God can love the world (action not feeling) and still hate sinners (again probably an action like the action of sending them to hell)

I thought it started with an L...

How is charity love? Do you realize how many scams are out there or how many people are stealing your money? Some charities give the tiniest portion of the donations possible, people are greedy.

"Charity" is from the King James Version (KJV), and it was the common vernacular for love. "Love" had other connotations in 1611, and "charity" fit better the idea.

Yes, and you should love your neighbor as yourself. (neighbor-fellowman,woman not just next door) Do unto others as you would have them do to you. 1 Corinthians 13 is commonly known as the LOVE chapter because it describes what love is.KJV

I agree....but...the word "charity" in English is from the Latin "caritas" from the Greek (original) "agape" - and that means "love". So, yes...."giving of yourself to someone in need" is the definition of "agape" love.
