The IRS does not allow you to file w/o a w-2 until after Feb. 15th, however, @ Jackson Hewitt, they have what is called a prefile Money Now. It begins on Dec. 29th and you come in w/your last pay stub of the yr. and they give you an estimate of what your refund will be and you can leave with part of your refund in your hand! When you get your w-2 you go back in and they actually do the return, send it to the IRS, and take the part you've already got and the tax prep fees out of the rest of your refund.

File Taxes Without W2

Some info on the w-2 is not contained on your pay stub.
Many of the paid prep firms will ask you to wait till you receive the w-2 before filing but will offer you a loan until you receive your refund.
You can find many do it yourself online tax prep services where you can enter the info yourself (if you know how) and efile yourself without anyone asking for the w-2.
If your income is below a certain level you may be able to efile for free. To efile you will need your employers tax id # which you can get from your payroll dept or last years w2 if you worked for the same company last year

If you have all the information from the W-2, you can e-file without the actual form. As martyb said, you need your employers EIN which may not be on the pay stub, but should be on last years W-2. The fastest way to get your return is to e-file with direct deposit. There are free e-file options for most people. Keep in mind, even with e-file and direct deposit, it will probably take at least 2 weeks to receive your return.

No. The IRS requires the W-2. That is considered the "official" reporting of your income. Anyone can make a fake paystub. You can fake a W-2, but the actual W-2 gets sent to the IRS by the employer and eventually the two are compared.

You must have your W-2 to file your taxes.

You have to have your W2 to show what you paid in taxes. File electronic with direct deposit. Will get it back faster that way.
