One need is the ability to communicate either for them in English, or for someone else to speak their language.

Counseling is of course a necessary tool. It is also necessary to have an understanding of what they went through and of their cultural background. To Americans something may seem horrific or completely normal and may be perceived as the opposite to someone who was raised in another culture.

My mom helped refugees from the former Yugoslavia for quite some time. Most of the people she helped were very successful with few problems. One of the men however, had severe problems and attacked a woman that was trying to help him. Perhaps services should be set up upon their arrival to avoid these things before they happen. That would require having a professional who can communicate in their language. Most of the people when they come here have not had advance notice and are not prepared to communicate.
