No wisecracks, please! I find that I'm either shredding or ripping up all bar codes on ANY mail that I receive. Someone told me that the bar code and the small numbers under it gives information about the person to whom the mail is addressed to.

Yes, it is your address. It helps the mail go through the system faster... so that it can go through the automatic sorting machines.

It is your address barcoded for quicker sorting. All local mail goes to a central sorting facility that covers several smaller towns. It sorts them by bar code. It makes for quicker sorting and delivery. This is why when someone is hand addressing an envelope, it is so very important to print clearly, so that the machine can read the handwriting and print the proper address in the bar code. Otherwise, it gets delayed.

The bar codes are used by postal sorting machines to automatically sort mail. The machines are faster than human sorters. Request a group tour of a postal sorting facility to see them in action.

It simply gives your address in a way that can be read by scanners. If that was not placed on the envelope, it would have to be read by a person each and every time it went to a new postal plant. This way it is only read by a person once.

So it does give out information about you; your address!

It's your name and address, and as far as I know, that's it. It's sprayed on the envelope by mail processing equipment.
