Your neck has seven vertebrae. A broken neck refers to a fracture or dislocation of the bones (vertebrae) of the neck. Any strong or forceful blow may cause trauma to the neck bones and result to fracture or a broken neck. It may also cause dislocation of the neck bones. Severe and sudden twist to the neck may also lead to dislocation.
A neck fracture is normally caused by severe trauma to the neck. Examples of trauma could be:
>>Falls, such as from a horse or bike
>>Collisions, such as motorcycle or automobile
>>Diving into shallow water
>>Severe and sudden twist to the neck
>>Severe blows to the head or neck area
At what point your neck will break would depend on the strength of your bone and anatomical variation as well as the amount of impact of the force applied.☺

it is the same as every other bone in princable. but the breaking point varies between people. if you move you neck front to back or side to side by yourself you will feel no pain if you neck is fully extended back you will have another 10 to 15 % movement before it could start to reach breking point. a lot of time it is the sudden movement that cause a break because the pressures on the neck are way over and above the norm. it is far more likly to break your neck by a snapping force than by slow steady force.

There are different things that could go wrong with the neck (arteries, windpipe, spinal cord...) It all depends on the angle of the blow, the speed and force of it the state of your bone structure (osteporotic or not, age, bone structure, abnormalities), the position your neck's in at the moment, were you moving it... and so on. So yes it's a stupid question in a sense that it cannot be answered as it is.

It needs a lot of force.
Only a small process (bony bit) in your vertebra breaks.
This does all the damage.
So while people are hanged - the knot is placed near the chin for a quick and easy break.
If ever the knot is in the back of the neck ( some novice suicide attempts are like this), then this break does not happen and they have a prolonged and horrible asphyxiation.

Depends - the bones can break but leave the spinal cord intact or the spinal cord can be severed leading to death or paralysis from the break down. It takes a lot to break the bones but this in itself can severe the cord. Usually caused by accidents, hanging etc.

I think the spine would have to break in the neck itself...or maybe the wind pipe would have to be crushed...both might qualify.
